CONDUCTOR - CHEFFE D'ORCHESTRE
Chloé Dufresne is making her mark as a conductor to watch with her clean technique and wide palette of colours. A prize winner at both the 2021 Malko and Besançon Conducting Competitions, Chloé has been selected as a Dudamel Fellow with the Los Angeles Philharmonic. She was a finalist in the 2020 Siemens-Hallé International Conductors Competition and nominated in the new conductors category at the 2022 Victoires de la Musique Classique.
Dufresne began the 22/23 season as a Conducting Fellow at the Lucerne Festival where she conducted the Lucerne Festival Contemporary Orchestra in a piece by Tyshawn Sorey. This season she conducts the Helsinki Philharmonic Orchestra, Orchestre de Chambre de Paris, Orchestre National de Lille, Orchestre de l’Opéra de Montpellier and Los Angeles Philharmonic Orchestra, and in October makes her Japanese debut with the Tokyo Philharmonic conducting Berlioz Symphonie fantastique. In the pit she conducts a new production of Donizetti Elisir d’amore for Angers Nantes Opéra, Gounod Faust for Opéra de Vichy and Offenbach Le Voyage dans la Lune at opera houses in Massy, Metz, Reims and Rouen.
Her vocal and choral conducting backgrounds lend her naturally to opera. She has conducted titles including Mozart Don Giovanni, Bellini Norma, Britten Albert Herring and Offenbach Pomme d’Api and Le Voyage dans la lune for Opéra Rouen, Opéra de Toulon, Opéra Nice and Opéra National de Lorraine and a Bayreuth production of Wagner Ring for children at the Helsinki Festival. She is strong in romantic and contemporary music and was praised by Besançon jury chair Paul Daniel for her “originality and freshness, and an especially good understanding of Camille Pépin”. In symphonic repertoire she has recently conducted the Orchestre National de Lille, Orchestre National de France, Orchestre National d’ile de France, Orchestre National des Pays de la Loire, Orchestre d’Auvernge, Vassa City Orchestra and Pori Sinfonietta. In summer 2022 was she was a Conducting Fellow at the Lucerne Festival where she conducted the Lucerne Festival Contemporary Orchestra in a piece by Tyshawn Sorey.
Chloé Dufresne studied viola, singing and choral conducting before completing her Masters in conducting from the Sibelius Academy in Helsinki in 2020 where he teachers included Atso Almila, Sakari Oramo and Alain Altinoglu during a secondment to the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Paris. She attended masterclasses with Mikko Franck, Paavo Jarvi, Hannu Lintu, David Zinman Thomas Adè and Susanna Mälkki and has assisted Sakari Oramo and Laurence Equilbey. This season she assists Gustavo Dudamel, Michael Tilson-Thomas and Esa-Pekka Salonen with the Los Angeles Philharmonic.
